Eligibility for Registration

A person is eligible for provisional registration if they –

  • Hold approved qualifications and experience (see accepted qualifications below)
  • Meet administrative requirements:
    • - completed application form
    • - provide required identification
    • - paid the annual fee.
  • Hold a current South Australian Working with Children check (within 5 years).
  • Are not a prohibited person and are deemed fit and proper, based on a national criminal history check.
  • May be required to provide medical information where capacity to teach is in question.

Accepted qualifications for registration

Under Regulation 7, accepted qualifications include:

  • A 4-year Initial Teacher Education (ITE) bachelor degree, (AITSL accredited)
  • A postgraduate ITE qualification, plus a 4-year undergraduate qualification, (AITSL accredited)
  • A postgraduate Birth-5 teaching qualification, (ACECQA assessed) plus a 4-year undergraduate qualification
  • A 3-year bachelor Birth-5 teaching qualification, (ACECQA assessed)
  • A postgraduate Birth-5 qualification (ACECQA assessed) with an approved entry pathway assessed by the higher education provider.
  • Other ACECQA approved early childhood teaching qualification (excluding Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas).

Not accepted:

  • Graduate Certificate (Early Childhood)
  • Graduate Diploma (Early Childhood)

English Language Proficiency Requirement

Teachers must demonstrate English proficiency sufficient for professional practice with:

  • children
  • families
  • colleagues

Where qualifications are completed outside Australia, applicants may be required to complete an approved test:

  • IELTS (Academic)
  • ISLPR

Overseas Trained Teachers

Teachers qualified outside Australia (excluding New Zealand) must apply for a qualification assessment.

Applicants must provide certified (and translated where required) copies of:

  • passport and birth certificate
  • name change documents (if applicable)
  • academic transcripts and qualification certificates
  • evidence of supervised teaching practice

Assessment typically takes up to 6 weeks.

Teachers from New Zealand may apply under Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition.

Mutual Recognition

Teachers registered in another Australian jurisdiction or New Zealand may apply under mutual recognition.

Important considerations:

  • Early Childhood Teachers from Victoria may receive registration with a condition
  • Some qualifications (e.g. WA Graduate Diploma pathways) may be recognised for registration but not accepted by all employers
