Why do I have to pay registration fees?

The Teachers Registration Board (TRB) is an Independent Statutory Authority established to regulate the teaching profession. The TRB is funded through the collection of registration fees. It receives no funding from government.

Your registration fees support the work undertaken by the TRB to serve the South Australian teaching profession and protect the best interests of learners in its care.

How are my fees calculated?

The TRB operates under the Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004 and fees are prescribed within the Teachers Registration and Standards Regulations 2021.

There are three components to registration fees:

  • Application fee (non-refundable)
  • Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) fee (non-refundable)
  • Annual fees (payable for at least 1 year, up to 5 years)

Application fees are payable for registration, special authorisation to teach, and assessment of overseas qualifications. A NCCHC may be required upon application for registration or authorisation.

Upon successful application, teacher registration is granted for 5 years (to 31 January of the fifth year). An application to renew registration is required prior to expiry of a current term of registration.

Annual fees must be paid for at least 1 year but can be paid for up to 5 years (to the end of your registration period).

Fees are subject to annual indexation in the Regulations. Indexation is calculated using the Australian Bureau of Statistics Consumer Price Index (CPI) for Adelaide for the year ending 30 September in the previous calendar year. Fees are indexed from 1 February every year. Upfront payment of multiple years’ annual fees will avoid CPI increases for those future years.

See the summary schedule below for current fees.

If I withdraw my application, do I get my fees back?

If you decide to withdraw your application prior to registration being granted, or if your application for registration is unsuccessful, the annual fee/s may be refunded if the NCCHC has not been conducted.

An assessment of qualifications fee will not be refunded under any circumstances.

Applications
Complete the payment details on the relevant application form. You can pay by Visa or MasterCard, cheque or money order. Please note that the Card Verification Value (CVV) number is required. The CVV number is located on the back of your card and is the three-digit number to the right of the signature strip. Your payment will be processed once your completed application is received. All applications are dealt with in a confidential manner by the TRB and your card and CVV numbers will be destroyed once your application has been processed.

You will receive reminders by email and SMS when your annual fees are due to be paid. Go to the TRB website and sign in to your Teachers Portal to view your annual fee payment options, make a payment, and download a copy of your Statement of Teacher Registration (to show your employer if required). Annual fee payments must be paid via your Teachers Portal (except when paid at the time of registration).
